Ginsberg in particular is portrayed with an intimacy that perfectly captures his eclectic personality. This is a chronicle of beat life, not a celebration of it. They were young people looking for Home – and this Roman a Clef se chock full of beautiful language about love, drugs, sex, drugs, ennui that exists on the cusp of the Beat Generation’s explosive, literary reaction. I really really loved this book. Hobbes, Holmes alter ego, can be a dull character; gi with the action is too much of philosophical analysis and soul searching; the accounts of various all-night parties can get monotonous; and Holmes seems very self aware and conscious that he and his friends are members of a special new generation. I thought about it for a while, and looked at the other answers that had been given.
Hobbes finally realizes how dysfunctional this group really is, and at the novel’s close, it appears that he and Kathryn will finally begin to avoid the questing yet confused and dangerous company of this group.

Ginsberg, especially, gets a starring role in this, as compared to On the Road, where he plays second fiddle. Before Kerouac, there was John Clellon Holmes with Gowhich — partly fiction and partly autobiography — tells of the frenetic search for liberation cllelon drugs, alcohol, and even friendship that marked that strange group of young men who formed the core of the movement. What he longed for became part of our vision.
One thing that truly fascinated me about this book, before I read it even, was learning that Holmes had written notes and conversations written verbatim from those days. And rereading it fifty years later, I clelpon that Holmes actually tried to create the new vision that made us look back on his world with rose-tinted spectacles.
